May 21 A.Men Club Father/Son Breakfast

On Sunday, May 21st we will have a Father/Son Breakfast following the 8:30 Mass. Our guest speaker is Gary Montgomery, Sportscaster for WDRB. Although there has not been an Ascension Father/Son breakfast for some time, it has deep roots that go back to the 60’s or early 70’s. We encourage you to make every effort to attend and spend this quality time with your father, grandfather, or son. Friends and neighbors are welcome.

Donations will be accepted at the door to defray the cost of the breakfast.

Please advise if you plan to attend and the number in your party by emailing mg.grether@insightbb.com or by calling George Grether at 459-9923.

Minutes from March 23 meeting

Note: while we got together on February xx, there was no formal meeting, as everyone was consumed by the discussion of whether to become part of the regional school or to remain stand-alone. Of course, the decision in the end was to remain standalone.

March 23

This meeting was held on the 4th Thursday this month, because 8th grade confirmation was on the 16th.

8:17

o Meeting was called to order by George Grether.

o Opening prayer by Carl Herde.

o A brief discussion of the brochure that will be going out to parishioners and St. Regis Park neighbors.

o Discussion of "splitting" the split the pot, and maybe making the second drawing a reverse raffle, or the Nth one (such as, the 10th ticket drawn will get the other half of the half). Tabled until next meeting due to low turnout and low split the pot amounts.

o Discussion of re-starting the Father-Son breakfast. Will try to do it April 23. John Rousseau volunteered to put together the food (sausage, biscuits, scrambled eggs). Clancy, George, Pat Plamp, Greg Gorman, among others agreed to help with it. We will make sure to try to get the word out to Alumni of the old Father-Son breakfasts.

o Our thoughts and prayers are with Sam Tyler.

o If you have not turned in your stewardship forms, please do so immediately. If the school has to go to tuition, instead of full stewardship, you will be allowed to change your pledge amount. Everyone came together last month to say how important it was to remain standalone; now, it's time to put the words into action.

o Fish Fry is a booster event that is mostly for socializing. We don't make much money on it, because our costs are so high for the food. Last week was down as much as 40%, due to the UL Game, St. Patrick's day, and the Archbishop giving dispensation for St. Patrick's day.

o Meeting adjourned at 8:59.

The Next meeting will be Thursday, April 20.

TOWN HALL MEETING

7:00 P.M. in Church

St. Barnabas, St. Pius and St. Bartholomew have formally requested permission from the Archbishop to close their schools and open a new regional school in August, 2006. Our parish leadership wants to present the information that we know about this proposal to our entire parish and to hear your thoughts and reactions to it before we make a decision to join or not join them in this effort. There will be a short informative presentation followed by discussion in small groups to give every person an opportunity to have their opinion heard. This issue affects our entire community, not only our families with children in the school. Please join us in the church on Thursday evening.

Old Business

Feb 11 PTO Card Party

Kevin Bright and Clancy DeCuir worked with Molly Maddox, and they have agreed that the A.Men club will help with the "Casino" part of the party.

There will be 7 tables: 2 Showdown, 2 Blackjack, 2 Beat the Dealer, and 1 Roulette. Tony Forns will bring his brats and sausages (spicy). Card Party will be 7pm - 1am. We will not be able to set up until probably after 3pm, because there are basketball games scheduled for the gym that day. Please contact Kevin "BRIGHT @ msdlouky.org" or Clancy "decuirc @ aol.com" if you have not already signed up to help.

On Sunday, Jan 22, there will be a gathering at the Pizza Place back room, from 2:30 to 6:30 to watch the Steelers - Broncos game.

The New Year's Eve Dance, had 66 people attend. It turned an $80 profit after expenses, plus $200 from the UL football game board.

We received another update about our parishioner that recently lost his wife. Loneliness is the biggest enemy. He combats that by shopping with his daughter, something he had not really done before. We decided to get him a gift certificate for Oxmoor Mall, to encourage him to continue connecting with his daughter. One thing we have learned from this situation is that when someone is hurting and lost, asking them what we can help with is likely to get an answer of "no thanks". Instead, we should likely just pick something that will help, and do it, as it is the thought that counts.

There was a discussion of the school survey that went out to parishioners. Greg promised to email to all A.Men mailing list the email addresses of Father Gary Padgett and Mary Jo Ellis.

Tom Mattingly won the $15 door prize drawing.

Meeting adjourned. Barbecue was enjoyed by all.

A.Men! First Meeting

Attention Ascension Men!

Join us this Thursday, May 19 at 7pm, in the Ascension cafeteria for the next meeting of the A.Men Club (Ascension Men's Club). We welcome all men of Ascension (minimum age is 21).

Featured Food: Sloppy Joe's and Bean Soup
Featured Activity: "Corn Hole" tournament.

Corn Hole is a game similar to horseshoes, only safer, especially around alcohol. Bags filled with corn (similar to large bean bags) are tossed at a slanted platform that has a hole. Three points are scored for a bag that goes through the hole, one point for a bag that remains on the platform. For more information, check out this link.

As always, you are free to participate in the cornhole tournament, bring something else to do, or just to socialize with the other men of Ascension.

Beer and fountain drinks are available.

Join the men of Ascension for the next A.Men meeting!

Don't forget to bring cash for the split the pot! See you there!
