School Secretary

Susie Thomas is on her 32nd year as the Secretary of Ascension School. She attended St. Edward School and graduated from Jeffersontown High School. She has two sons, Bradley, Jr. & Troy Thomas and three granddaughters, Kenley, Farrah and Presley.  In her spare time she loves boating, fishing, cooking and the beach!

Valerie Shell

Kids Time Director

Valerie grew up in St Louis, Missouri. She attended college at Southwest Baptist University where she obtained a bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. She has worked in the field of early childhood for 25 years. Valerie and her husband Michael have three children; Trinity, Autumn and Justice. In her free time she enjoys shopping, hiking, pinterest projects, DIYing around the house and hanging out with friends and family.

Rachel Skaggs

Assistant Director Kids Time

Rachel Skaggs grew up in Grayson County, Kentucky, near Rough River Lake. She has a degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education and has been working with children for 20 years. She has been married to her husband, Robert, for 16 years. She has 3 beautiful daughters; Hannah, Kaelyn, and Rebekah. As a family they love to spend time at the lake boating, swimming and fishing.

Ann Sinkhorn

3 Year Old Teacher

Ann is the three-year-old preschool teacher. She has been working in preschool for 30 years. She attended the University of Louisville, and has continued her education at JCC in the early childhood development field. She and her husband Kurt are parishioners at Ascension and they have a daughter Molly that is a Freshman at Mercy Academy. She enjoys gardening, sewing, crafting, and spending time with her family.

Laura Vogt

Assistant Three Year Old Teacher

Laura is the assistant three year old preschool teacher. She has over 20 years experience educating young children from six weeks of age through preschool. She has her Child Development Associate Credential and is a Certified Nursing Assistant. Laura recently married her best friend Stephen. She has a son named Justin who is the research manager in the Spinal Cord Injury Department at Fraiser Rehab. Laura enjoys attending plays, sporting events, and car shows with her family and friends.

Abby Cahoe

Junior Kindergarten Teacher

Abby grew up in LaGrange Ky and attended Immaculate Conception. She then attended hight school at Mercy Academy and finished her college career at Campbellsville University, earning a bachelors degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education. She is married to Chad, and they have two daughters, Collins and Callie Jo, who attend Ascension. Abby enjoys spending time with her family on their farm, crafting, fishing, hunting and cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats and Cincinnati Reds.

Nancy Gatewood

Jr. Kindergarten Assistant

Nancy has been teaching at Ascension for 14 years. She enjoys watching the children grow throughout the years since she has been at Ascension. She has 3 children, Megan, Jake, and Ryan. In her spare time she likes to swim and read.

Lindsey Ackerman-Denson


Lindsey Ackerman-Denson is originally from Owensboro, Ky. She graduated from Owensboro Catholic and received her undergrad at Murray State and masters degree at the University of the Cumberland’s. She has been teaching for 11 years, 9 of which have been at Ascension. She started out as the JK teacher and moved to Kindergarten in 2014. Fun Facts: Lindsey’s first kindergarten class was the choir at her wedding. Lindsey has one child, Gus, who just turned 1 this past fall! Lindsey is very family oriented, every Wednesday all of her siblings meet at her parents for family night supper. She loves watching any and all UofL sporting events and holding fat babies.

Margaret Burchell

Kindergarten Assistant

Margaret was a preschool teacher for a number of years at Christian Academy and has been a Library Clerk with JCPS for the last 5 years.  She has been married to Tim for 30 years, and they have two sons, William and Ben.  Both boys have graduated from college and live in New York and Philadelphia, respectively.  In her spare time, Margaret likes to read, spend time with family and friends, walk her dog (Woody) and try new hobbies.  Her current new hobby is a tomato garden!

Haley Jenks

1st Grade

Haley Jenks is originally from Savannah, Georgia. She moved to Kentucky at an early age and attended Ascension Grade School. Haley recently graduated with honors from the University of Louisville. She received her bachelor’s of science in Early Elementary Education with a minor in English. In addition to her passion for children, she enjoys yoga, hiking, reading, and cooking. Haley has a progressive and enthusiastic teaching style that will make children eager to learn!

Betty Jaggers

1st Grade Assistant

Betty has been with Ascension for the past 17 years helping with Kindergarten through 5th grade. This school year she will be the 1st grade assistance, while also helping Susie in the office and overseeing the yearbook committee. Betty is a Louisville native, having attended St. James School and graduated from Mercy Academy. She has previously tutored with the Shedd’s Dyslexia Foundation for 4 years. Betty has been married 46 years to Brent E. Jaggers Sr. She has 2 sons and 7 grandchildren, with two of them attending Ascension, Jaylynn and Destiny. When not at school Betty loves to vacation with her family.

Stephanie Schmitt
Gr’s. 3-5 Language Arts

 Stephanie Schmitt is excited to be back in the Ascension community! She is a Louisville native and an Ascension alum (2007). This is her 6th year in elementary teaching. She comes to us from Rangeland Elementary with experience teaching 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade. She attended Bellarmine University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and Learning and Behavioral Disorders and continued her education there receiving a Master of Arts with a Literacy Endorsement. She has also specialized in Project Based Learning and competency-based education strategies. Stephanie is married to her high school sweetheart, Bobby. She enjoys time spent with family, friends, and her Husky Aero. Her passions outside of school include health and wellness, being an entrepreneur, and anything creative.

Trinity has lived in Louisville all her life and loves everything it has to offer! Trinity attended Walden School K-8th grade and then graduated from Eastern High School. Following, Trinity attended the University of Louisville and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Early Childhood. Trinity also had the opportunity to study abroad in Red Bank, Belize where she taught Math in a first grade classroom. She is in the process of obtaining her Master’s degree in Teacher Leadership from Bellarmine University. This will be Trinity’s fourth year teaching at Ascension and she continues to help in the Ascension Summer Program as well. When Trinity is not teaching or spending time with children, she enjoys crafting, kayaking, camping, spending time with family and friends, and traveling new places.

Casie Disselkamp

Casie grew up in Clearwater, Florida and attended the University of Central Florida where she received her Bachelor’s Degree. She went on to obtain a Masters of Art in Teaching from the University of South Florida. After graduation, she spent the next 6 years in Tampa working in both the Catholic and public-school systems where she taught fourth and fifth grade.  Upon meeting her husband, John, a native Louisvillian and St. X graduate, she moved to Louisville in 2016. In her free time, Casie enjoys traveling, reading, and exploring Louisville.

Donna Jackel

Gr’s. K-5 Science

Donna is the elementary science teacher. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Masters in Education from the University of Louisville. She has a lifelong passion for science. Donna has been married to Bruce for thirty years and they have three daughters and a grandson. Donna is a parishioner at Ascension. In her spare time she enjoys reading, knitting, going out to eat and during the summer she can be found enjoying the lake.

Vilma Makram

Gr’s. K-5 Spanish

Vilma is a first-generation American, born to Guatemalan immigrants. She grew up in California, where she attended Cerritos College.Vilma began teaching Spanish for the Archdiocese in the fall of 2017. For the past four years she has served as a teacher for Classical Conversations cottage schools and has homeschooled her children since 2007. She is active in her church’s children ministry, specifically in the area of special needs, and she loves teaching and learning God’s word. She also enjoys spending time in nature with her family.

Jahnna Harvey

Jahnna Harvey moved to Louisville from Chicago two years ago. Originally from Nashville, she attended Saint Cecilia Academy for high school before moving on to Penn State University and the University of Baltimore School of Law. After seven years in administrative law, she decided to go back to school and become a certified teacher. She has a Masters in Teaching from National Louis University in Chicago, Illinois. She and her husband, Josh Groft, have been married twelve years and have two large dogs, Charlie and Wren, with whom they love exploring their new hometown.

Daniel Vowels

Dan has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Louisville and a Masters Degree in Education from Spalding University. Dan and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for 22 years and have two children, Julia and James, both of whom were baptized at Ascension.  Julia is a recent graduate of Mercy Academy and is attending Bellarmine University. James is a senior and varsity wrestler at Saint Xavier High School. Dan has a 14 year Pomeranian named Sweetheart and a 6 month old kitten named Johanna. He enjoys spending time with his family and traveling.

Erin recently graduated from Centre College with a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies and a minor in Education. Although she is new to Ascension, she has had classroom experience in Cincinnati, OH, Danville, KY, and Ghana, Africa. Erin loves traveling to new and exciting places. Dr. Michael Shell

Gr’s. 6-8 Trivium

Dr. Shell teaches philosophy, logic and ethics at Jefferson Community and Technical College here in Louisville and earned his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Kentucky.  He earned two Master’s degrees at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Biblical Languages and Archeology and did his undergraduate work in Bible and Biblical Languages at Southwest Baptist University in Missouri. Michael and Valerie have three children: Trinity (who is well known to the Ascension family), Autumn, and Justice. Dr. Shell also pastors a small church in the west end of Louisville. In his free time, he enjoys reading and the great outdoors.

Amy Stout

Music Teacher

Amy Stout grew up a stone’s throw from the beach in Hilton Head Island, SC. She started piano lessons at 8 years old and continued them through high school. Mrs. Stout moved to NC after graduating and there she completed her BM in Music Education at The University of North Carolina in Greensboro. For 2 years, Mrs. Stout taught high school choir in Greensboro NC. She then moved to Louisville, KY to pursue an MA in Worship Leadership from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Last October Mrs. Stout married her husband Chris and together they have 2 dogs, Daisy and Bo. Mrs. Stout is the keys player and choir coordinator at her church. In her free time, Mrs. Stout loves riding horses, cooking, crafting, reading, and spending time outside.

Ann Smith


Ann is in her 25th year of teaching art at Ascension. Originally from Bardstown, Ky. She graduated from Bethlehem high school. She then attended Eastern Kentucky University where she received her bachelors degree in art education. She went on to receive her masters in elementary education from the University of Louisville.
Ann has been married to her husband Michael for 30 years. They are proud parents of their son Drew and daughter Audrey. They recently adopted their dog Sadie who is sweet, smart and quite the trouble maker!
In her free time Ann enjoys spending time with family and friends on her patio at home. She also enjoys taking time to paint and experiment with all forms of art in her home studio, attending outdoor festivals and practicing hot yoga.

Barbara Wagner

Librarian / Computer Teacher

Barbara is the Library / Technology teacher.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Louisville.  She also has an Associate’s Degree in Data Processing Technology from Speed Scientific School at UofL.  She was a volunteer in Ascension’s Library for 12 years and a substitute teacher. Barbara is a parishioner at Ascension. She has been married to Tom for 24 years and has two children, Lauren and Madison.

Darla Radcliff

PE Teacher

Darla is the physical education teacher. She has a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Louisville. She has been at Ascension for 17 years. She was a 4th grade teacher for 12 years before moving to P.E. When not at Ascension, she is playing tennis, walking or watching her grandchildren!

Kellie Hood

Learning Coordinator

Mrs. Kellie Hood, born and raised in Louisville, earned her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Brescia College in 1998 at which time she began her teaching career.  In May of 2005, Mrs. Hood earned her M.S. in Elementary Education from Indiana University Southeast. In 2010, she earned her Rank I in Instructional Leadership from Bellarmine University.  In over a twenty year span in Catholic education she has served in numerous capacities including teacher grades K-5, assistant principal, principal, and learning coordinator.

Mrs. Hood is committed to Catholic education and it’s importance in shaping young lives.  She cherishes spending time with both her extended and immediate family which includes her husband David, and their children Grace and Nash.

KaDee Ezell


Hello, Ascension Catholic School Community! KaDee Ezell is the new School Counselor for Ascension Catholic School! She was raised in La Grange, KY (just east of Louisville) where she attended Oldham County Schools.  After high school, she pursued her bachelor’s degree in Communications and her master’s degree in School Guidance Counseling, both at Spalding University. Her education and training are based on the American School Counselor Association’s (ASCA) National Model and Strengths-Based School Counseling Framework.

KaDee’s background has not only been working in education as a counselor intern and substitute teacher, but she has also spent many years in direct sales where she obtained unique skills that have proved to be useful in her career as a counselor.  She has a burning passion to advocate for our youth by inspiring, motivating and empowering them to reach their fullest potential in life-academically, socially, emotionally, spiritually and in becoming ready to transition to life beyond K-12.  In addition, she believes it is important to advocate for our parents, teachers and community.  She also believes that in order to help students thrive, you have to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and all staff members of the school and parish community.

KaDee’s greatest blessing is getting to be a mother to 3 children- Jared (14), Brody (10) and Mia (7).  In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, working out at the gym, playing corn-hole, bullet journaling, reading books for pleasure and personal development, and watching her oldest son race Legend Cars (NASCAR affiliated).

Jim Grider


Jim Grider attended Chenoweth Elementary and graduated from Waggener High School. He has three children, Mary Ann, Patricia and Sid, Jr. and eight grandchildren. Jim has worked as the maintenance supervisor at Ascension since 1999. When not at Ascension, Jim enjoys Nascar Racing and spending time with his grandchildren.
