DO YOU HAVE CONSULTING SKILLS FOR MISSION & DEVELOPMENT?
For the weekend of 9/10 and 9/11, Father Adam shared a homily expressing where we were, where we are, and where we are going to coincide with our Year-in-Review report. If you missed that weekend, you can still catch the gospel and homily on our YouTube.

Part of Father’s homily shared his desire to have the parish look into a consulting group in recognition of the tensions that are present in our community. There are a couple of groups that are being considered that Father will bring to our Parish Council. The group’s purpose would be to provide an outside view of our parish, how we are doing and what we might do to move forward. As a part of this process, we want to make sure we aren’t overlooking anyone in our parish that might have these gifts. If you or a parishioner you know has this type of skillset and would be interested in helping the parish in a consulting role, please consider stopping by our Parish Council meeting on 9/27 at 6:30 PM in the Ave Maria Room. A summary description can be found at https://www.ascension-parish.com/parish-consulting-group/. Please contact Patrick, our Pastoral Associate at pparris@ascension-parish.com with your desire to help.

SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM – GRADES 6 – 8
We will be starting our Suicide Prevention program in the upcoming weeks. The curriculum will be presented during guidance class on the following days:
– 7th grade: Wednesday September 28
– 6th grade: Wednesday October 5
– 8th grade: Wednesday October 12

During this year, I am working to teach students about mental health and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic and encourages them to seek help.

SOS has been used by thousands of schools over the past few decades. Studies have shown that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number of students’ self-reported suicide attempts.

Through the program, students learn:
• that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
• how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
• to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
• who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it

In addition to learning how to save a life, middle school students will be provided the opportunity to reflect on their own mental health and participate in a screening. A screening is a basic questionnaire and is not meant to be a diagnostic tool. It is a way to encourage students to become more self-aware of their mental health and to become empowered to seek help when needed. After participating in the screening, students will be given an exit slip that asks if they are in need of talking to an adult about a friend or themselves.

I will be providing time in the afternoon immediately after the program on 9/28, 10/5, and 10/12 for immediate follow-ups. For those students who do not need immediate follow-up but would still like to speak with someone, there will be times during the following day (9/29, 10/6, & 10/13) for other follow-ups.

We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn. My Google site also has resources that you may find beneficial to your family.

If you are wanting more information and more in-depth training on childhood suicide prevention, I will be hosting an optional SOS Parent Training Zoom Meeting on Thursday September 29 6:00pm-6:30pm. I will send out a Zoom link prior to the meeting. Please reach out to me at lhoehler@ascension-parish.com or 502-451-2535 ext. #13 for questions or more information.

Providing our students with the tools necessary to become empowered to take care of their mental health and possibly help save a life is very important to Ascension School. These tools can be utilized in the future and provide our students with the help and support they need.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
Lynnzi Hoehler, M.Ed.
School Counselor

BOX TOPS COLLECTION
Did you know that Ascension is a Box Tops school? During this challenging time, our teachers and students need more help than ever. No matter what school looks like, Box Tops for Education is a fast and easy way for you to help out from home.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Buy participating products and use the Box Tops mobile app to scan your store receipt. The app identifies eligible products and automatically adds Box Tops to your school’s earnings online. Even if you’re shopping online or doing grocery pickup, you can still submit your e-receipts and earn Box Tops. Twice a year, our school gets a check!

The PTO uses money earned from Box Tops to fund our iPad program and other classroom needs for our students!

Here’s how YOU can help earn money for our school!
• DOWNLOAD the Box Tops app and select our school to support. This ensures that your Box Tops purchases count toward our school’s earnings.
• SHOP for Box Tops products and use the app to scan your receipt to add to our school’s earnings online.
• LOOK for any remaining Box Tops clips on packages. If you find some, clip them and send them to school!
• SPREAD THE WORD about Box Tops!
FUN TIP: You can also use the “Invite Friends” feature in the app to ask friends and family to help support our school!

Your earnings may seem small, but they really do add up. The more people that participate, the bigger the impact we can make. So let’s give our teachers the support they need and help give more kids the opportunity to dream. Little by little, we can help make a BIG difference.
